Atenolol Interactions with Dietary Supplements

Potassium
Some beta-adrenergic blockers (called “nonselective” beta blockers) decrease the uptake of potassium from the blood into the cells,1 leading to excess potassium in the blood, a potentially dangerous condition known as hyperkalemia.2 People taking beta-blockers should therefore avoid taking potassium supplements, or eating large quantities of fruit (e.g., bananas), unless directed to do so by their doctor.

Atenolol Interactions with Herbs

Pleurisy root
As pleurisy root and other plants in the Aesclepius species contain cardiac glycosides, it is best to avoid use of pleurisy root with heart medications such as atenolol.3

Atenolol Interactions with Foods and Other Compounds

Food
may be taken with or without food.4

Alcohol
may cause drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, or blurred vision.5 Alcohol may intensify these effects and increase the risk of accidental injury. To prevent problems, people taking atenolol should avoid alcohol.

Tobacco
In a double-blind study of ten cigarette smokers with angina treated with atenolol for one week, angina episodes were significantly reduced during the nonsmoking phase compared to the smoking phase.6 People with angina taking atenolol who do not smoke should avoid starting. Those who smoke should consult with their prescribing doctor about quitting.

I am a recent patient of hypertension and have started taking 25 mg. of atenolol with 2.5 mg of amlodipine and one ditide tablets in the morning and atorvastatin 10 mg. with ecosprin 75 mg. at night. I felt symptoms of low pulse which came up to 59, dizzines, lightheadedness and very lethargic. There was sense of depression. Medication was prescribed by a medical specialist and a cardiologist. I realized with brisk walking for an hour the symptoms given above reduced to 90%. It took me about seven days to come to normal routine. If doctor had advised me about side effects I may have been mentally prepared to go through the ordeal. All is well now.

I have a leaky heart valve, I have heart palpatations, and I have been taking Atenolol for over a year. I would like to wean myself off of this medication and take a natural vitamin such as 400 mg of Vitamin E.

Terrible. Absolutely dreadful, should be banned. I was admitted to hospital given this drug. It felt like I was another planet, flashing lights, pains in my tummy like glass, dizzy, couldnt eat anything, sick all the time, 6 hours at time sick. Terrible bloating. Vivid dreams. I have stopped taking it
