Who hasn’t heard of Dr. Oz? Or, more to the point, who hasn’t rushed out of the house to buy a product after seeing it on the Dr. Oz show? It’s not surprising, considering that the celebrity doctor has mesmerized so many people, that he commands such buying power in the marketplace. The Dr. Oz Effect, or the Dr. Oz's ability to drive consumers to purchase the products or ingredients he promotes, may have started out in Oprah’s shadow but has since transformed the vitamin and supplement industry. Consumers trust his recommendations, retailers must stock his recommended products and manufacturers drool at the opportunity to get their products promoted on his show.

What makes Dr. Oz sell? Critics say he promotes pseudoscience at best and quackery at worst, but despite this - the man sells. Dr. Oz is able to command such a wide consumer base because, point blank, his fans trust him. All product recommendations have been tirelessly researched and Dr. Oz personally tries all or most of the products he recommends. And it's working. Consumers Google Dr. Oz recommended products before his show even begins to run the closing credits.

Here are some of his most popular recommendations and those that saw significant surges in searches and purchases since being promoted on the Dr. Oz Show.

  1. Forskolin

An extract from the root of the native Indian herb Coleus Forskohlii, forskolin has been a traditional Hindu medicine used by the natives to treat asthma, painful urination, hypothyroidism and heart diseases, among other ailments. Most recently, it's being studied for its anti-HIV activity and its potential to prevent cancer metastasis.

The popularity of forskolin today lies not in its medicinal values but more on its proven functions as a:

  • Fat burner
  • Weight loss supplement
  • Lean mass and muscle builder
  • Treatment for erectile dysfunction and impotence

These benefits make forskolin a valuable supplement for athletes, people who engage in regular exercise, obese individuals and middle-aged men.

  1. Lingonberry

A recent find in the US health market is the lingonberry, a plant that grows abundantly in the Scandinavian countries of Iceland and Finland. This “superfruit,” as Dr. Oz calls it, is a rich source of vitamins A, C and the B vitamins,  the minerals magnesium, potassium, calcium and phosphorus, flavonoids and omega 3 fatty acid. The lingonberry has a very high polyphenol content and as more studies are being done, it seems to surpass the cranberry and blueberry benefits-wise.

Among the uses of lingonberry are as treatment for diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular illnesses, breast cancer, urogenital conditions and various infections. It's also a powerful antioxidant and replenishes the body’s supply of glutathione, a valuable element in the body that supports critical functions like detoxifying the cells and helping in the production of white blood cells. By protecting the body from damage caused by free radicals, it aids in cell preservation and delays aging.

In stores, lingonberry supplements may go by the names cowberry, mountain cranberry or red whortleberry.

  1. Glucomannan (Konjac Root)

Glucomannan comes from the root of the konjac plant, thus its other name konjac root. It's a starchy plant that boasts of great benefits for being rich in fiberGlucomannan is touted as a weight loss and an anti-aging supplement. Lesser known are its effects on lowering the sugar and cholesterol levels in the blood. Taken before meals, the fiber absorbs sugar and fats from the body, resulting in a lowered glycemic index and reducing cholesterol levels. It offers allergy relief by inhibiting IgE production, an immunoglobulin that causes allergic reactions.

Glucomannan aids in digestion, hence facilitating excretion of waste and hastening weight loss. As a very viscous fiber, it absorbs up to 50 times its weight in water, giving you a sense of fullness and staving off hunger pangs. These two characteristics (aid in digestion and feeling of fullness) make glucomannan a very effective weight loss strategy. Glucomannan’s anti-aging role is its prevention or delay in brain deterioration and cell aging.

  1. Resveratrol

The component found in red wine and responsible for the creation of the French Paradox, resveratrol is one among the most popular antioxidants thanks to Dr. Oz's plug. Studies have shown that resveratrol has a cardioprotective effect, reducing the risks for heart attacks and coronary artery diseases.

Other benefits of resveratrol are its delaying action in cell decline and boosting the immune system. It averts the aging process by improving muscle tone, promoting restful sleep and counteracting the toxicity of high caloric foods. It also helps in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.

These are only four of the countless recommendations Dr. Oz has advised for healthy living, and the surge in demand for the products is unmistakably due to the Dr. Oz Effect. Just on eVitamins alone, sales for PGX fiber jumped nine times after the product was plugged on the show, and Reviva's Skin Lightener with Kojic Acid has since become one of the most popular products on the entire site since the good doctor talked about the benefits of Kojic Acid on his show. Just like how Oprah's Book Club sticker sells books, Dr. Oz recommended supplements are guaranteed to be hot items.

Here are a few products I recommend:

Reviva Labs Skin Lightener Day Fade Cream w Kojic Acid  Reviva Labs Skin Lightener Day Fade Cream w Kojic Acid
Why do I recommend this specific product? Reviva's Skin Lightener has been a very hot item since Dr. Oz plugged kojic acid. It gets good reviews and people often re-buy this item after they use it.
Natural Factors Slim Styx PGX Packets Unflavored Natural Factors Slim Styx PGX Packets Unflavored
