Sometimes, no matter what we try, we still have issues that ail us. For many, that issue is weight gain that seems to be out of control or even unavoidable. Sound like you? The answer could possibly be found in your body type and certain factors you're predisposed to.

A supplement that's gained attention for its ability to help lower cholesterol may be the solution for anyone carrying extra weight -- guggul.

Where Guggul Comes From
Guggul (Commiphora mukul) is a tree that's similar to the myrrh tree. This extract is actually the sap or gum resin found within the tree. This tree is native to India and guggul has been used in Ayurvedic medicine, or Ayurveda, for thousands of years to treat internal conditions like ulcers, tumors and sinus issues. The plant sterol found within the plant, known as guggulsterone, is responsible for its medicinal qualities.

Guggul and Weight Loss
Guggul was featured on the June 20 episode of "The Dr. Oz Show" as an Ayurvedic remedy for individuals carrying extra body weight. Anyone with a naturally larger frame, known as the kapha body type in Ayurvedic medicine, or dosha, can benefit from taking this supplement because they typically experience slow digestion. When taken daily, between 75 and 150 mg, guggul can help speed the metabolism and burn extra fat stored throughout the body. It's shown to do this by interacting with the thyroid gland.

However, the key to guggul's success when it comes to weight loss is exercise, so be sure to take it as part of a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise program.

Guggul and Cholesterol
Another of the main benefits of adding guggul to your supplement regimen is improved cholesterol levels. Guggul has been shown to help lower "bad" (LDL) cholesterol and raise "good" (HDL) cholesterol levels. This action is once again attributed to the guggulsterones, which act as antioxidants. These antioxidants prevent the oxidation of cholesterol to prevent atherosclerosis. Taking the supplement daily can help lower your cholesterol which is beneficial to heart health and reducing risk for diabetes, heart attack and stroke.

Taking guggul can result in digestive issues. If you're prone to these types of symptoms or are being treated for a medical condition, speak with your health care professional before taking guggul. If you're on medication for high cholesterol, don't modify your dosage without seeking medical advice first.

Ayurvedic medicine is the "science of life" and understanding how your body works based on your body type may be your secret to maintaining a healthy weight.
