Finding a cure for cancer is among the top goals of the scientific and medical community. While research hasn't yet brought us a complete solution to eradicate cancer, we're finding more ways to prevent our chances of developing cancer in the first place.

Last week on "The Dr. Oz Show," Dr. Mehmet Oz welcomed Lindsey Duncan, a naturopathic doctor and certified nutritionist, to explain which supplements can help you protect your body from developing cancer. Duncan explained that supplements, and the nutrients they contain, are the building blocks for the body and that a balanced diet and regular exercise should always be the first step for prevention.

Here are the four supplements recommended by Duncan and Dr. Oz to help prevent the onset of cancer:

  1. IP-6
Inositol hexophosphate, or IP-6, is a carbohydrate molecule found in high fiber foods like grains, legumes and seeds. IP-6 has powerful antioxidant properties while also supporting a healthy immune and cardiovascular system. In relation to cancer, IP-6 has been shown in animal studies to disrupt the growth of cancer cells and may help to prevent colon, liver and lung cancer, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). For optimal results, trying taking 500 mg of IP-6 twice a day. This supplement is best for anyone who has, or has a family history of, cancer in the soft tissues of the body, like the skin, colon, lungs or liver.
  2. Black Raspberry
The difference between red raspberries and black raspberries are the micronutrients found in the pigment of the fruit -- these active compounds are called anthocyanins, and black raspberries contain more of them than any other berry. These anthocyanins help limit oxidative stress and prevent free radical damage along with vitamins A, E and C. Black raspberry may help to prevent esophageal and cervical cancer, as seen in animal studies conducted at Ohio State University, but everyone can benefit from it. Black raspberries can only be harvested in Oregon from July 1 to 21, making a freeze-dried supplement the best choice to make sure you're getting the full benefit. The recommended daily dose is 300 mg twice a day -- with one 300 mg capsule being equivalent to four cups of the fresh berries in terms of nutrients.
  3. Vitamin D
Low levels of vitamin D can be linked to cancers like cervical, breast and colorectal cancer. Vitamin D has been shown to reduce inflammation while boosting your immune system. According to the National Cancer Institute, in lab studies, vitamin D helped to differentiate and destroy cancer cells. Dr. Oz mentioned this product again on his May 29 episode. In addition to helping with cancer prevention, taking 1,000 IU of vitamin D daily can also help lose weight, according to new research. This vitamin can help to control your appetite while revving up your metabolism to help you burn fat. While we can obtain vitamin D from the sun as well as food, we don't always get enough each day. Vitamin D should be a staple in everyone's diet for overall health, protecting the bones and teeth in particular by increasing calcium absorption.
  4. Selenium:
This trace mineral has been shown to help prevent colorectal and lung cancer by protecting the cells of the entire body as seen in studies conducted between 1983 and the early 1990s, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements with the National Institutes of Health (NIH). With powerful antioxidant properties, selenium helps build up our body's natural defense system while removing free radicals from blood that can make us sick. While multivitamins typically contain selenium, Duncan recommended 200 mcg daily to really see the benefits in relation to cancer prevention. If you have a family history of colon or lung cancer, this is the supplement for you to help reduce your risk.

Other supplements known to help reduce your risk for cancer or assist in your cancer treatment include shark cartilage, silymarin and AHCC, which promote healthy cell growth and function while boosting your immune system. Always consult your doctor before adding one of these supplements to your daily regimen if you're currently being treated for cancer.

These supplements can help reduce your risk for the disease that remains the second leading cause of death in the United States, with more than 550,000 deaths reported in 2009, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Would you give them a try?
