Ante Up With Antioxidants Before X-Rays, CT Scans

The article covers the findings of a recent study that tested the anticarcinogenic properties of antioxidants before having radioactive scans on the body.

Recently, at the Society of Interventional Radiology’s 36th Annually Scientific Meeting in Chicago, Dr. Kieran J. Murphy announced that a combination of antioxidants taken before scans involving ionizing radiation (X-ray, CT) could help protect against the damaging effects of the scan.

According to Dr. Murphy, the deputy chief of radiology at the University of Toronto, when the X-rays collide with the water molecules in the body, free radicals are produced. These free radicals go on to react with the body's cells, damaging genetic material and leading to cancer.

Dr. Murphy and his colleagues tested blood samples from two different volunteers. The blood samples were tested before and after exposure to ionizing radiation, with one test subject supplementing with vitamin C, glutathione and uric acid for five days prioir to testing and the other not taking any supplements. The DNA injury to white cells and the reduction in DNA injury were evaluated after testing, with drastic differences being noted between the control and the variable.

“In our intial small study, we found that pre-administering to patients a proprietary antioxidant formulation resulted in a notable dose-dependent reduction in DNA injury,” says Dr. Murphy. “Pre-administering this formula before a medical imaging exam may be one of the most important tools to provide radio protection and especially important for patients getting CT scans.”
